About
Laneway
Welcome! Laneway Coffee and Kitchen is a multi roaster cafe and restaurant serving high quality hand crafted coffee, incredible sandwiches and elevated comfort food.
We serve Discovery Coffee as our standard espresso and batch brew, however, we also carry a rotating selection of very special coffees on our pour over menu and in retails bags from featured roasters from all over Canada.
Our food menu is designed for dine in, or take-away and features local and seasonal ingredients. It’s wholesome, jam packed with flavour, and being that everything's made to order, we can modify most items to suit dietary restrictions.
Our Mission
Our mission is to challenge people’s expectation of a small town cafe! We are passionate about food, coffee and service and we hold ourselves and our business to a very high standard.
At Laneway Coffee, it is our mission to elevate the experience of going out for coffee the way that a taproom does for craft beer. We chose this wording very specifically as this is our way of explaining coffee as a craft product to our community and making the concept of being a multi-roaster cafe with fantastic food approachable.
As coffee professionals, we are passionate about coffee, and hope that by sharing our passion, we can inspire members of our community to value coffee in the same way that they already value craft beer or wine. This is important to us, as we believe that if the general public were to hold a higher respect for coffee, we could have a positive effect towards decolonizing coffee and elevating the future of this complicated industry.
Behind Laneway
Hello! I am Avelyn (in the middle), this is my life and business partner Kellan (on the left) and our small terrier, Winston. We moved to the Comox Valley from Victoria in 2019 with the intention to open up an amazing coffee and lunch spot.
I am a coffee professional: I have worked as a barista, cafe manager, roastery assistant, coffee trainor/advisor, and was a one-time barista competitor! Kellan has worked in and around kitchens since he was 14, becoming a head chef at 22 and over the last decade has created food programs, menus and run kitchens for a number of restaurants. We’ve both had similar experiences of advising and opening up businesses for other people, so in a way, joining forces to open Laneway Coffee and Kitchen feels like the natural progression of our careers and relationship.
A year after moving to the valley, we secured a location for Laneway Coffee and Kitchen and spent the next two years building the space and business. It was a huge learning curve for us and being on a tight budget, we were forced to do most of the design and a lot of the build out ourselves. Fortunately, as well as being a chef, Kellan is also an incredible vintage motorcycle builder. His skills for building choppers were put to use in the cafe by welding our dish pit area together, metal fabricating signs, frames and decor, and upholstering our otherwise budget chairs and stools.
We have put so much time, effort, thought and care into Laneway, and we are so proud of the business we built together. It means so much to us to be able to share it with you!
